Glühbier

Glühbier

Popular in Germany, mulled beer is a wonderful alternative to mulled wine – a little less rich and sweet, but still delivering those snowy Christmas-market vibes with every sip. Cherries help bring together the hoppy beer and fragrant spices.

Ingredients

  • 75g frozen cherries
  • 2 tbsp light brown soft sugar
  • 500ml dark wheat beer (we used Erdinger Dunkel)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 cloves
  • 2 cardamom pods, lightly crushed with the side of a knife
  • 1 star anise
  • 1 orange, scrubbed and sliced
  • 1 unwaxed lemon, sliced
  • 150ml Cherry Good Juice Drink
  • 60ml dark rum (optional)

Method

  1. Put the frozen cherries and sugar in a bowl; mix well and let stand for around 1 hour to begin to thaw.

  2. Tip the cherries and their juices into a large pan over a low heat. Add the beer, spices and ½ of the citrus slices. Heat gently for 5-10 minutes until hot but not simmering.

  3. Add the cherry juice drink, heat for a further minute or so, then strain through a fine sieve into a large heatproof jug or bowl.

  4. Pour into 4 heatproof glasses or mugs and garnish with the remaining citrus slices. Add 1 tbsp rum to each serving, if liked.

Cook’s tip

If you can’t find cherry juice, try pomegranate or cranberry instead.
