Rosh Hashanah recipes
Rosh Hashanah (translating to ‘head of the year’) is a two-day celebration of the Jewish New Year. It falls any time between early September and October, following the lunar calendar which Judaism uses. It’s a time to reflect on the past year, as well as hope for health and prosperity in the coming one – this is all reflected in the food served during the celebratory meal.
Apples and honey are the main edible event during Rosh Hashanah, signifying the sweet year that it’s hoped will follow. Pillowy challah bread is dipped in honey to kick off the celebrations, alongside pomegranate, dates, leeks and, traditionally, the head of a meat or fish – all of which have symbolic meanings.
